History

Hugra is one of 103 Union Parishad of Tangail Sadar Upa-Zilla ( Sub-district). The locality once was a plain land, but the diversion of Old Brahmaputra ushering in a gradual but radical change in the river system of the Tangail district, its eastern channel shifted up so rapidly that the Jamuna eventually become the principal stream and the entire locality suddenly flown over by its erosion. Since then, the geography of this locality completely changed and it become more of a char area.

It is believed that two brothers, namely Jaona Deo & Maona Deo ( Deo meaning the Giant) were the first inhabitants of this land between mighty river Jamuna and Dhaleswery they conquered this land fighting with the crocks in the water and the Decoits in the land. Their ancestor Moulavi Habibur Rahman fought against the outlaws and defeated the then the most notorious outlaw, most wanted by the then British government, Kosimuddin Dewan ( better known as Koisa Dewan)- this freed this locality from decoits & outlaws and people started to live here without fear. Moulavi Habibur Rahman was awarded by the government for his bravery act, he was very popular personality of this locality and elected as Chairman of Hugra UP consecutively for 30 years.

Later on, in late 70’s Mr. Akram Hossain, son of Moulavi Habibur Rahman, lead the people to a movement against the thieves and the cow lifters to free this land from the anti social elements.
