JHENIDAH, dec 22: Low price of T-Aman (Transplanted Aman) paddy has frustrated the farmers of Jhenidah.
Harvesting of paddy has ended in Jhenidah district. Farmers achieved a bumper production of paddy but low price of Aman paddy has frustrated them. As a result, ‘Nabannya Utsob’ of the villagers is not going on well. According to Jhenidah district Agriculture Extension Department (AED), farmers cultivated T-Aman paddy on 88,835 hectares of land in six upazilas of the district in the current season. The upazilas are Sadar, Harinakundu, Shoilkupa, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur and Moheshpur.
Deputy Director of AED Jhenidah, Joynul Abedin, said that this year favourable weather, adequate rainfall, supply of fertilizer, watering, electricity, seeds and pesticides were the cause of the bumper production.
AED sources said T-Aman paddy was cultivated on 20,800 hectares of land in Jhenidah Sadar upazila, 18,585 hectares of land in Shoilkupa upazila, 17,000 hectares of land in Kaliganj upazila, 7,950 hectares of land in Harinakundu upazila, 6,300 hectares of land in Kotchandpur upazila and 16,400 hectares of land in Moheshpur upazila this year.
This correspondent visited Khalishpur Bazaar, SBK, Fotehpur, Pantapara, Shamkur, Nepa, Mandarbariya, Azampur Latima, Voiroba Bazaar and Zinnanogor Bazaar of Moheshpur upazila, Borobazaar, Shundorpur-Durgapur, Niyamotpur, Shimla-Rokonpur, Raigram, Kastovanga, Kolarbazaar, Chaprailbazaar and Rakhalgachi, Gazir Bazaar of Kaliganj upazila, Talsar Bazaar, Sabdalpur Bazaar, Dora, Kushna, Boluhor and Elangi Bazaar of Kotchandpur upazila, Tular Bazaar,Vaina, Joradah, Folshi, Roghunathpur, Kapashatiya Bazaar, Shithlir Bazaar, Chandpur Bazaar, Narayanpur Bazaar, Chulkanir Bazaar of Harinakundu upazila, Sheikhpara Bazaar, Vatoi Bazaar, Garagong Bazaar, Kobirpur Bazaar, Abaipur Bazaar, Tribeni, Mirzapur, Fulhori, Dignogor, Hakimpur and Monohorpur of Shoilkupa upazila, Hatgopalpur Bazaar, Modhupur Bazaar, Holidhani Bazaar, Bishoikhali Bazaar, Podmakor, Horishonkorpur, Surat, Kalicharanpur, Dogachi, Moharajpur, Tetultola Bazaar and Goalpara Bazaar of Jhenidah sadar upazila and found that farmers bought diesel per liter for Tk 61, per bag fertilizer for Tk 1,000. Besides, they bought seeds and pesticides at high prices this year than that in the last year.
DAE sources said they were expecting around 2,48,000 tonnes of rice from the Aman paddy this year.
Johor Ali, a farmer of Narendrapur village under Kaliganj upazila, told the Independent that the production of BINA-7 variety of paddy was good. The yield was about 3.20 tonnes per hectare this year. Most of the farmers cultivated this variety of paddy on their lands in Jhenidah district. BINA-7 was evolved a few years ago and it is giving better result. Several farmers told this correspondent that they are frustrated about the low price of paddy.
